Born in Bologna into a family of musicians, Guido Reni was the son of Daniele Reni and Ginevra de’ Pozzi. As a child of nine, he was apprenticed under the Bolognese studio of Denis Calvaert.

Morandi was born in Bologna, Italy. In 1907 he went to study at Accademia di Belle arti . The school, which based its traditions on 14th century painting, taught himself to etch by studying books on Rembrandt. The works of his formative years were related to Cèzanne and to Cubism, with a brief digression into a Futurist style.

However, in the latter city, he received excellent teaching in physics and electrical engineering, respectively, by Professors Giotto Bizzarrini and Vincenzo Rosa, who also gave private lessons. Also at Leghorn, was an important meeting with an old telegraph operator who taught him the Morse code
